Yarn Sub (yarnsub.com) is a free web-based tool for finding substitute yarns. If a pattern calls for a specific yarn you cannot find or afford, Yarn Sub helps you find a suitable alternative by brand, fiber, gauge, or weight.

Find a substitute yarn by entering the name of any yarn into Yarn Sub. The tool checks weight, fiber, gauge, and yardage to rank how well each alternative matches.

Enter the name of a yarn (like “Cascade 220”) and Yarn Sub returns a list of suggested substitutes. Each result includes:

  • Match level: Close match, good match, or similar
  • Fiber content: What the yarn is made of
  • Weight category: Lace, DK, worsted, etc.
  • Gauge: Stitches per inch
  • Yardage per skein: How much yarn you get
  • Care instructions: Washing and drying info

Yarn Sub gives you three ways to find what you need.

Type the brand and yarn name into the search box. Yarn Sub suggests matching yarns as you type.

Search for yarns by fiber type, like “merino wool” or “cotton”, and find options with similar characteristics.

Search for yarns that match a specific gauge. This helps when you need a yarn that hits a particular tension for a pattern.

How does Yarn Sub decide if a yarn is a good match?

Section titled “How does Yarn Sub decide if a yarn is a good match?”

Yarn Sub evaluates four factors to rank how well a substitute matches your original yarn.

A “close match” means the yarns are very similar across all factors. A “good match” means they are close enough with minor adjustments.

  • Weight category: Matching weights matter most
  • Fiber content: Similar fibers behave similarly in projects
  • Gauge: Matching gauge keeps your project the right size
  • Yardage: Similar yardage helps you buy the right amount

What tips should I know when substituting yarn?

Section titled “What tips should I know when substituting yarn?”
  • Check yardage per skein. You may need a different number of skeins even if the yarns match.
  • Fiber matters. A wool substitute behaves differently than a cotton one. Pay attention to fiber for drape.
  • Swatch first. Always make a gauge swatch with your substitute yarn before starting.
  • Free and no account needed. Yarn Sub requires no sign-up.
  • Browser only. Works on any device but has no mobile app.
